From Direct Teach to Group Work/ Independent Work

The transition from direct teach to group or independent work can be somewhat difficult, but the CHAMPS Transition Worksheet allows the teacher to evaluate the class on each of the CHAMPS letter acronyms. My preference for the transition from direct teach to group or independent work would be for the students to have:

  • Conversation: a level 0 to level 2 in voice level where there is minimal conversation.

  • Help: Once the students are settled down doing their work, the students should ask for help by raising their hands, and if they are waiting to be assisted, then they are to wait patiently, quietly, and remain in their seats (unless for an emergency). It is preferable for the students to stop raising their hands if the teacher is still helping another student, and other students should decide who raised their hands first when indicated by the teacher.

  • Activity: If the activity is independent work the students are to have a level 0 voice level. During group work students are able to have up to level 2 in voice level. Getting set up for these activities should only take up to 2 minutes maximum.

  • Movement: Independent work does not involve movement, but group work may if the students have to move desks into groups of three or four students.

  • Participation: Students during independent work are to do the assignment given without much conversation. During this time the student may get out of the seat to sharpen their pencil or obtain anything necessary within the classroom to complete the assignment. They need permission to leave the classroom anytime during the period. While the students are working in groups they are to do the assignment given with minimal conversation, and are able to get up within the classroom for anything they might need.
