Direct Teach

During direct teach the teacher should figure out the following expectations from the students through the use of CHAMPS.

  • Conversation: During this time the students' voice level should be level 0 therefore the students are not to speak to each other.

  • Help: Students are to raise their hand silently for any questions they may have from the teacher's presentation/lecture. If they are waiting to be answered, then they are to wait patiently, quietly, and remain in their seats (unless for an emergency). It is preferable for the students to stop raising their hands if the teacher is still answering another student, and other students should decide who raised their hands first when indicated by the teacher.

  • Activity: The students are to listen and take notes in order to easily do the activities or assignments the teacher asks the students to complete.

  • Movement: There should be no movement by the student unless to sharpen their pencil or for emergencies. Going to the restroom is acceptable, but not within the first 10 minutes of class. Students are to ask permission only to leave the classroom, therefore there is no need for students to ask to sharpen their pencil or obtain a tissue.

  • Participation: The students should look at the front of the classroom towards the teacher and the presentation taking place. They are also encouraged to ask questions if unclear on any topic addressed by the teacher. The students are not to talk during this time while the teacher is talking, and they are not to do anything other than take notes and listen.
